Reader Question: Should You Talk About Finances Before Getting Engaged?

Reader Question: Should You Talk About Finances Before Getting Engaged?

Last night, I had a reader contact me and ask a very poignant question. He asked if his family member should discuss finances with her potential future husband before getting engaged. She didn't think it was necessary until after engagement, and he said they should discuss "money, budgets, life goals, etc. now and not wait until a ring is exchanged." I totally agreed. My Response Here was my response to him: Sorry to hear about that. My wife and I discussed money while dating, and I believe it's important to go over details of one's financial situation, plans for the future, … [Read more...]

How To Travel For Free: 4 Cities in 8 Days

Welcome to another episode of "How To Travel For Free" (or at least, that's what I'm calling it now). This is where I help people travel without having to pay out of pocket for any of the hotel or airline expenses. My goal is always for them to be on a budget 1st, then take advantage of their awesome budgeting discipline and apply it to credit card churning for travel rewards. Let's see what we have in the mailbag today. Hi!  I've been a big fan of the blog since I started reading earlier this year, and I love how you take reader's scenarios and give advice.  I have a question for you about … [Read more...]

We Only Drive Fancy Cars

We Only Drive Fancy Cars

It's that time of month again where I talk about cars! If you don't know where I stand on these wonderful machines, you can read about them here and here. I love to find a great deal on a car, and am an advocate for using MATH to determine what you can afford and what is a waste of money. Today I want to let you in on a little secret that has allowed us to enjoy luxury without breaking the bank. I'll show you how awesome it is to buy cars like we do, and allow you to enjoy luxury as well. We Only Drive Fancy Cars It's true. Ever since we got married, Michelle and I have been blessed to be … [Read more...]

How To Save Money When You Buy Electronics

How To Save Money When You Buy Electronics

Ahhh, technology. You can't escape it! Heck, you're engrossed in its awesomeness right now just to read my blog (thanks!). To some, it's a necessary evil that plagues the earth and sucks the life out of anything that comes in contact with it (or maybe that's just me…). To most, it's something that makes the world just that much easier and more enjoyable. With apps for everything, gadgets that make you lunch, and the ability to read iHeartBudgets on a mobile device, technology is enriching the lives and smart people such as yourselves. But it does come with one downside. IT’S FREAKING … [Read more...]

Wisdom About Cars From My Grandpa

Wisdom About Cars From My Grandpa

My grandpa is awesome. He has lived an amazingly adventurous life, with 6 kids and a wife of almost 60 years! He has the most awesome stories, and if you get him talking, you won't be going anywhere for a LONG while (grab a snickers). In the past decade, he got some speech recognition software for his computer, and started dictating his life story. My wife has the privilege of editing this story to eventually be printed soon. It's probably 250 pages on a traditional book print, over 60,000 words and full of all kinds of fun stories from my grandpa's life. I've been able to catch parts and … [Read more...]

Too Rich For A Budget

Too Rich For A Budget

I have a budget. And I enjoy my budget. And I really like tracking my spending, getting great deals, improving our financial situation and making progress because I have a financial roadmap. But there are some out there who don't find any value with all the hassle it takes to log into Mint.com and look at where their money is going. I mean, seriously, 5 minutes is a CRAP LOAD of time, and it can't be wasted getting a snapshot of my entire financial picture so I can make sound financial decisions!!! What a waste. My time is just too valuable for that. This one's for you. Too Rich … [Read more...]

When To Go Christmas Shopping

When To Go Christmas Shopping

I know, I know, too soon, right? But bear with me here. I have already been seeing the usual suspects around town. Christmas lights in the "seasonal" section of the grocery stores. Christmas lights on my friggin' neighbor’s porch. CHRSTIMAS LIGHTS ON THE INTERNET! Whether we like it or not, seasonal creep is happening everywhere we look, AND YOU CAN'T STOP IT. So might as well talk about the inevitable; Christmas Shopping. Christmas is the single most profitable event in human history. Especially in the land of cash money, America. According to the National Retail Federation, holiday sales … [Read more...]
